Interesting fact

Dr. Lickness gives me homework assignments. Yesterday it was a history lesson after I told him I would be heading to Boston for my next rotation and today some fun facts.

Todays homework assignment: why is everything in the OR including your scrubs blue or green?

The answer: Prior to the 1950's all OR attire was white, to symbolize cleanliness. The problem with this was that in a very brightly light OR with all white scrubs and linens, surgeons eyes would fatigue, resulting in eye strain. Therefore surgical attire was changed to light blue or green, to create a high contrast environment. The inside of the surgical field is varying shades of red. Blue and green which reside on the opposite side of the color wheel create contrast therefore decreasing the strain on surgeons eyes.

  1. This is a large practice, will you have the opportunity to work with other providers or will it be the same one for all 6 weeks? I was going to say "period" but thought better of it, then decided to throw it in anyway!

  2. Dr. Lickness is part of a larger group, however he has his own office with two NP's. I have had the opportunity to work with one of the nurse practitioners while he was working at the community clinic. It is nice to see how differently the NP's function from the physician as this is a better representation of the work I will potentially be doing if I decided to work in OBGYN. I may have the opportunity to work with other physicians, however Dr. Lickness agreed to take me as a student not his group. I know towards the end of my rotation I will be spending the day with an oncologist who specializes in female cancers which I am looking forward to.
